Club History

The Jersey Triathlon Club has been around since 1985 and among its founder members are some of Jersey's most well known sports people such as Maurice and Jo Lakeman and Channel swimmer Sally Minty Gravett. The sport of Triathlon combines swimming, running and cycling.

The size of the club and interest in the sport of triathlon has steadily increased over the years, inspiring people from lots of different sporting backgrounds. That's the beauty of triathlon, you don't have to stick to just one discipline or have to excel in one particular sport to participate. You can also vary your training from a swim once a day, a cycle the next and perhaps a run the day after, depending on how you feel.

The sport of triathlon, which involves swimming, cycling and then running, was created in the island of Hawaii and this first race consisted of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle followed by a 26.2 mile run. This length of race is now known as the Ironman distance and is still run in Hawaii every October for those brave enough to attempt it.

The Jersey Triathlon Club organise local races much shorter than the Ironman, these typically consist of a 750m sea swim, 20k bike ride followed by a 5k run, known as the sprint distance, these races are run in the summer. The first triathlon each year is traditionally the novice triathlon, which is a sprint race and is open to anyone who has not completed a triathlon previously. The season is completed with the tri club's main event, which involves a 1500m-sea swim, 40k-bike ride and a 10k run. This distance is known as the Olympic or Classic distance race and the Jersey race has attracted many well known professional athletes over the years, including Olympic swimmer - Robin Brew, Olympic windsurfer - Richard Hobson and Junior triathlon World Champion and Olympic Triathlete - Tim Don, who have all raced with local competitors.

The club welcomes anyone who wishes to attempt any of the races and details can be obtained from any of the club officials.

ISLAND GAMES / COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Jersey Triathlon Club sent local athletes to represent the Island in the Isle of Man Island Games competition in 2001, winning gold, silver and bronze for the ladies, gold and silver for the men, and team gold for both the ladies and men's teams - an outstanding achievement.  In 2007, the mens Jersey team returned from Rhodes with an impressive 1st 2nd & 3rd places in the Island Games Triathlon.

The sport of triathlon is now firmly in the Commonwealth Games calender and in 2002 the Jersey Triathlon Club sent one athlete to compete in Manchester.  In 2006, the Jersey Triathlon Club sent 3 athletes to compete in Melbourne.

Over the years the Jersey Triathlon Club has produced top class athletes who have raced in many locations around the globe, and since 1991 (Derek Taylor) and 1992 and 1993 (also Dougie Smith) there has been representation from the Island in the Great Britain Triathlon Team every year, competing in the UK and World Championships. The club also has the past European Triathlon Champion for male age group 30-34. More recently club athletes Tim Rogers, Paul Clements and Scott Pitcher competed in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. Mike Lucas podiumed for the British National Sprint Championships. Both Rogers and Lucas have placed top ten in the World Championships, with Rogers also claiming a top five at Ironman Korea (2006) and Hawaii Qualifier for the World Ironman Championships. Other Ironmen include Steve Hickson, Gary Jones, and Anthony Smith.

During the past couple of years the Tri club have paid host to several training week-ends, those include - Julian Goater {UK 10k record holder}, and Duncan Rolley {Olympic Swimmer}. In April 2000 the Jersey Tri Club hosted the prestigious Powerman.

The effect of past events such as these, event have been felt throughout local schools and the community, enabling the Jersey Tri Club to grow in stature, grow in size and promote the sport to produce future Champions.
